Baby Bok Choy with Oyster Sauce

I don't know since when I got addicted to eating steamed vegetables with oyster sauce, perhaps thanks to all those times I frequented Dim Sum places for brunch with friends and family.
Often if I like a dish enough, I would search high and low for recipes to make them at home; as such Baby Bok Choy with Oyster Sauce is one of those dishes!

There are a few variations that I have tried and tested and  to be honest, I  them all.

Variation 1 is nice if you don't want it to be too saucy and of course for presentation, it looks better as well.
2 tbspns oyster sauce
3 tbspns chicken stock
2 tspns soy sauce
1 tspn sesame oil
4-5 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tspn corn flour (cornstarch), mixed with
1 tbsp (extra) chicken stock
1 bunch baby bok choy, bottoms trimmed, washed.
  1. Heat a small saucepan over high heat, add 1tbsp oil, fry the minced garlic until golden. Combine oyster sauce, stock, soy sauce, sesame oil and corn flour mixture.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until sauce bubbles and thickens; remove from heat.
  3. Blanch bok choy in a saucepan of boiling water for about 1 minute; remove from pan with a slotted spoon and rinsed under cold running water. Drained.
  4. Pour oyster sauce over it and serve.

For Variation 2, I added in ¼ cup of oyster sauce instead of 2 tbspns to make it more saucy - just the way I like it!

The New Shima

Lured in by their sign of Cheap Eats under $10.00 for lunch, Miss Katie and I ventured into this hidden charm one lunch time, to discover that The New Shima not only a nice and welcoming place to eat, but the food were also great and value for money as well.

Both Katie and I tried out this deal first -
while Katie has the Teriyaki Chicken set above with the drink;
I chose to have the Teriyaki Fish set, also with a drink and it was delish!

We subsequently came back to The New Shima numerous times after ward and tried out the rest of their menu.

Below are a few of our favourites...
Chicken Udon $7.50
Japanese Curry $7.50
Beef Bowl $7.50

For taste, atmosphere and value for money, I'd choose The New Shima over Taka any day, though the choices are not as extensive as Taka, but the quality of the food and service are well worth it!

It's not every day that I get to go to Claremont Quarter. Firstly, I don't live in the area and secondly there isn't a need for me to do so, unless I was craving for a really good chocolate hit from Koko Black!

So when MM said he has some errands to do in Claremont Quarter, I decided to tag along and checking out the place while we were there.

We arrived at Claremont Quarter just after midday and once MM has finished with his errands, we decided to grab a bite to eat and what better than Beluga since I have read so many good reviews about it!

At 2pm the lunch rush was over and Beluga wasn't as busy as we thought which was good for us, because we didn't have to queue up for tables or having long waits etc.  

I have been craving for Chilli Mussels for quite sometimes now and upon seeing that Beluga has Chilli Mussels on their menu, I was instantly happy!!!

Beside the Chilli Mussels, MM and I also ordered 2 Chef's Specials dishes, these weren't on the menu, but since the waitress advertised it so well, MM decided to try them too.

Chef's Special: Stuffed Squids - the squids were too tasty, we'd polished 'em off our plates in no time!

and who could resisted some extra chippies??

Beluga is amongst some of the best eats places in Perth, with its tasty food, friendly and attentive staff (not too pushy) and super efficient service, what more could you ask for? We will return.

Shanghai Tea Garden

I caught up for dinner with Karen and Michelle, whom I have met the ATFT's Photography Workshop back in July and this is the place that Karen has recommended to try as none of us have been here before.

I have seen Shanghai Tea Garden various times before (usually on my way to Lido or the Asian grocery stores nearby) but never had the chance to visit, until last Friday.

Shanghai Tea Garden has a really nice and traditional entrance look to its gate with red lantern hung at the top of the door frame, which I thought was very neat.

Shanghai Tea Garden isn't a very big place, and I was surprised to see that every single table they have  in there was 'reserved' - "This place must be good" I thought to myself.

As none of us have been there before and there were quite a few choices to pick, we decided to ask for recommendations from the waitstaff and below are the things that we have ordered.
Xia Jiang Spicy Chicken and Handmade Noodles (medium size; serves 3) -  This dish was strangely tasty and oh so filling! The noodle tastes great and they were quite addictive too
Xiao Long Bao [Shanghai Dumplings] tasted great, just as good as Dragon's too
I couldn't have a meal without some vegetables, so we ordered a dish of Fried String Beans with Garlic to share ツ

Overall our meal came to about $57.00 - $19pp for dinner in Northbridge is a bargain any day!

Good Fortune Roast Duck House

Good Fortune Roast Duck House has always been our favourites. MM and I often came here for our Roast Duck fix and we have been doing so, on and off for the last 10+ years. Some loyal customers we are indeed!!!

Roast Duck House, like many typical Hong Kong style hawker places, are considered to be an Asian equivalent to MacDonald's "fast food" for Westerner. It is simply a "no fuss" eating house. Don't expect 5 stars services here. Just go in, wait for a seat, order, eat and then go. Simple as that - so don't stress, otherwise it will ruin your day. 

Below are just a few of our usual favourite dishes at Good Fortune - we're creature of habits and tend to order the same dishes each time we'd come for our roast duck fix
